The negative effects of mineral extraction are that habitats are lost, together with the species that they support. They can be lost through direct removal by excavation, or indirectly through some of the environmental impacts.
For example, dust generated during excavation, processing or storage can settle on sensitive habitats and have an adverse effect. Changes in the water regime (surface water or ground water) may cause some habitats to dry out or others to become flooded. Noise may have no influence on some species, but may affect others. All of these potential impacts should be mitigated in order to minimise the negative impact on biodiversity.
